Minerals… what are they?
Minerals are extremely important for our bodies to maintain health. Here are some things they do!
Minerals turn food into energy. They keep our bones, muscles, heart, nervous system and brain working properly. They are an important part of making enzymes and hormones in our body.
Many processes and structures in the body require minerals in order to function at their optimum level. Minerals are the key part in the enzyme processes which are the drivers behind all the body’s metabolic processes. They are involved in building bones, making hormones, regulating the heartbeat, muscle action and nerve transmission. Macro-minerals are minerals the body needs in larger amounts, these include calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium, potassium, chloride and sulphur. The body also requires trace minerals in smaller amounts and these are iron, manganese, copper, iodine, zinc, cobalt and selenium. The best way to get minerals into the body is by eating a wide variety of foods. Mineral rich foods include green leafy vegetables, nuts, whole grains, root vegetables, fish, shellfish, broccoli, cabbage, kale, rice, eggs, mushrooms, seaweed, lentils, beans, citrus fruits, coconut and tomatoes.
